News: What is happening in the world of Madrugada and on this page? I try to stay as updated as possible, and I will try to bring you the latest rumours and facts concerning Madrugada. Of course, you will also be able to read all the interesting stuff about what has been updated or changed on this very webpage.

Madrugada are currently out on their European tour. If anyone feels like submitting setlists, reviews, information about bootleg recordings, any other information or simple comments about anything concerning the tour, it is appreciated at webmaster@madrugada.de. Thanks.

November 28th 2001 - According to the information I have gotten, Madrugada are scheduled to do four concerts in Greece from December 12th to 15th, in Larissa on the 12th, Thessaloniki on the 13th and two performances at Club Gagarin in Athens on the 14th and the 15th. This information is unconfirmed. Thanks to wase84.

The concert at Batschapp in Frankfurt, Germany on the 13th was filmed on video using two cameras, one next to the soundboard and one at the right side near the stage. Who were responsible for the filming is unknown. Thanks to Jens Hannemann for the information.

November 24th 2001 - There was a segment about Madrugada in "Absolutt Underholdning" on the Norwegian television channel TV2 last night. It lasted for a couple of minutes and featured clips from "We Are Go" and "Higher" from one of the two concerts in Tromsø, Norway this week, and short interviews with Frode and Robert.

The journalist said that the band is really looking forward to going into the studio again, and that they have about forty songs ready. He also mentioned that "Industrial Silence" sold 70.000 copies within Norway, while "The Nightly Disease" has sold 40.000 within Norway so far. Robert said that they really enjoyed the concerts in Germany, as the people come to listen to their music, the shows starts a bit earlier and everyone in the audience are really quiet during the quiet songs, which they appreciate.

Here is a short article that was published in the German magazine Guide about two weeks ago. It has been translated by Franziska Ress:

"Our favourite Norwegians are back. Back from festival battles and the long, desolate highways that are always associated with them. No road movie works as well without screen as Madrugada. Snakes and dust, longing lives in the viscous sound of the bottleneck. Having just been sent on a psychelic trip in the desert on your own by Sivert, Robert, Frode and Jon, looking back you have to wonder how many people took the same bus."

"Especially in Berlin hordes of people carry the 'Black Mambo' in their soul by now. Of course for the band this is a pleasant state of affairs. However, Madrugada's magic is always in danger of getting a bit lost with increasing size of the halls they play in. Someone who sounds like cheap motels just does not fit into the Adlon [expensive Berlin hotel]. So instead of seeing yourself on the roadside in the middle of nowhere you maybe realize that you are just at a rock concert. But as everybody knows, now and then this is an extremely electrifying place to be."

November 23rd 2001 - Here is the setlist from Strøget in Tromsø, Norway two nights ago, the first out of two concerts. There were about four hundred people in the audience, and a member of St. Thomas played violin on a couple of songs. The sound was bad in the beginning, but it got better throughout the concert. Thanks to Rune Andreassen for the information.

Setlist Strøget, Tromsø, Norway - November 21st 2001:
1. We Are Go 2. Higher 3. The Frontman 4. Beautyproof 5. Hands Up - I Love You 6. A Deadend Mind 7. The Riverbed 8. You Turned Me Away 9. Strange Color Blue 10. Belladonna 11. Lucy One 12. Two Black Bones 13. Black Mambo 14. Vocal 15. Lord Why Have You Left Me? 16. Sister 17. Nightly Disease Part II

Jon and Sivert were interviewed live on the German radio channel Radio Eins before their concert at Columbiahalle in Berlin on the 16th. The interview can be read here. Thanks to Franziska Ress for transcribing it.

November 22nd 2001 - Here is an offer for those who are interested in Madrugada bootlegs, but who are not already in posession of some that they can use to trade to get more:

"As most of you probably already know, several Madrugada concert recordings are circulating among traders. Considering these recordings can be quite difficult to obtain if you have nothing to trade, I thought some 'Blanks & Postage' would be a nice thing to do. This is how it works: You send off the required number of blank CDR discs, along with a return mailer / envelope with sufficient postage. I take your blank discs and record the concert(s) onto those discs, and then mail them back to you. I receive nothing in return for this service."

"I will accept B&P's for the following recordings (for a limited period of time):
- 26/03/01 Planetarium Am Insulaner, Berlin, Germany 1CDR
- 18/05/01 Balelek Music Farm, St. Gallen, Switzerland 2CD-R
(with acoustic filler tracks from 05/04/00 Hilversum, Holland)
- 25/08/01 Biddinghuizen, Lowlands Festival, Holland 1CDR"

"For more information about these recordings, or if you want to set up a 'normal' trade, have a look at my complete list at http://home.world-online.no/~az09az09. But please note I will not accept B&P's for any other show than the ones listed above, sorry. If interested, please e-mail me at andersar@tiscali.no. And remember, I'm not a robot, so send a nice and friendly email."

This B&P is being arranged by Anders Arvesen, and madrugada.de has nothing to do with it, but I think it is a very nice offer for those who are interested in Madrugada bootlegs but can not get ahold of them in any other way. Any questions about the B&P should be directed to the e-mail address of Anders, mentioned above.

Seventeen pictures from Star Club in Dresden, Germany on the 3rd can now be found here.

November 21st 2001 - Some info from Columbiahalle in Berlin, Germany on the 16th:

The band did a short interview live on Radio Eins, who presented the concert, in the afternoon. At the soundcheck they did "A Deadend Mind" and then "You Turned Me Away" three times, first intrumentally and then twice with vocals, and "Vocal."

St. Thomas got on stage at around nine, and everybody loved them. Thomas told everyone to buy their CDs, as their money had been stolen in Amsterdam and they needed some again, that people should not compare them to Kings Of Convenience as they do not like that band and that he had watched a 'schlager'-program on TV with bands having names like Tiroler Trio and wearing Lederhosen, and all the people had a little moustache. He said he also grew one like that, but that he shaved it off that morning before they got to the hip town Berlin. They were all sitting on stage, with a big parasol behind them, and Thomas said that the audience in Brugges did not like them, which destroyed their self-confidence. Usually they were standing on stage with electric guitars, he said. He added that the German audience is the best one in the world, while the Norwegians are 'rubbish.'

Madrugada got on stage and started with "Only When You're Gone" and "You Turned Me Away" with a member of St. Thomas playing violin. Sivert talked about "You Turned Me Away," and said "this is a new song. Not totally new, though, cause we've played it live a few times before" and then "the last song was just to test your patience. Now we'll play a quiet song. This song is so slow it's hardly a song," and started "Nightly Disease Part I." The guy from St. Thomas also played violin on "A Deadend Mind" and "Lord, WHy Have You Left Me." Sivert was wearing a t-shirt that had 'Frontman' written on it in big letters, while Frode wore a t-shirt saying 'Evil is going on,' which was also added to the lyrics in the end of "Two Black Bones."

Thanks a lot to Franziska Ress for all of this information plus the setlist.

Setlist Columbiahalle, Berlin, Germany - November 16th 2001:
1. Only When You're Gone 2. You Turned Me Away 3. Nightly Disease Part I 4. A Deadend Mind 5. Strange Colour Blue 6. Belladonna 7. The Frontman 8. Hands Up - I Love You 9. Higher 10. Lucy One 11. Two Black Bones 12. Black Mambo 13. Vocal 14. Lord, Why Have You Left Me 15. Sister 16. Nightly Disease Part II 17. We Are Go 18. Rollercoaster

It has been confirmed that Madrugada will do an extra-concert at Rockefeller in Oslo, Norway on December 8th. Tickets for the concert the same place the night before are almost sold out.

November 20th 2001 - Madrugada played a short and very strange set at Mejeriet in Lund, Sweden last night. They did not play one single song from "Industrial Silence," but they did a very rare live performance of "The Riverbed" and a new song they referred to as 'the country song' as it has no title as is therefore listed here as "Unknown Title #5".

There were between sixty and seventy people in the audience, and in the beginning of the concert Sivert welcomed the audience and introduced the band. He asked the audience if they understood Norwegian, and told them he could very well speak Swedish if they wanted him to, as he has lived in Sotckholm for four years. He said they were planning on playing some quiet songs, but the Norwegian word for quiet means fun in Swedish, so some people might have misunderstood... Thanks to Eva for the information and the setlist.

Setlist Mejeriet, Lund, Sweden - November 19th 2001:
1. The Riverbed 2. Only When You're Gone 3. You Turned Me Away 4. Nightly Disease Part I 5. A Deadend Mind 6. Unknown Title #5 7. Hands Up - I Love You 8. The Frontman 9. Black Mambo 10. Two Black Bones 11. Lord Why Have You Left Me

November 19th 2001 - Madrugada played a shorter set than usual at Voxhall in Århus, Denmark two nights ago. Understandable, as the band, and Sivert in particular, were heckled by retarded people in the audience throughout the concert. "Nightly Disease Part I," "Vocal," "Lord Why Have You Left Me" and "Sister" were all skipped from the setlist, leaving only twelve songs to be played. Here is what Jules Pitt wrote about it on the discussion forum:

"There was a lot of talking and shouting in the crowd all the way through the concert. The worst part, however, was that ten to fifteen people came to occupy the space just in front of Sivert and Robert, and these people showed no respect at all, in my opinion. They shouted abuse at the band, especially Sivert, all the way through the concert! They harrased Sivert a lot; tearing at his microphone cord non-stop and pulling at his legs, feet and trousers. They were also very agressive towards some of the people standing nearby. At one time two of them actually caught hold of Sivert's head and held him while he was kneeling down! I think this was during 'Higher.' He was also pulled off the stage."

"Things got very bad during 'Black Mambo,' and I guess that is why they skipped the three encores. Actually I did not think they would come back on stage at all! What happened was that the people in front of Sivert did not stop shouting at him and pulling at his feet and microphone. He asked people to be quiet three times just during 'Black Mambo,' and the last time this resulted in direct verbal abuse from some of the guys; two of them shouted at Sivert to 'shut the fuck up' at the top of their lungs! When the band left the stage just after 'Black Mambo,' the microphone was pulled out into the crowd."

"It was hard to tell what the intention was - it could have looked like regular crowd surfing, and I am not really sure how Sivert felt about it, but it seemed to me to be way too rough. It looked to me as if he was not sure how to take it. As a whole it is difficult for me to comment on how the band felt about this, but I could see that Sivert backed away from the people in front of him. The band seemed to be upset when they left the stage."

Setlist Voxhall, Århus, Denmark - November 17th 2001:
1. Only When You're Gone 2. You Turned Me Away 3. A Deadend Mind 4. Belladonna 5. Strange Colour Blue 6. The Frontman 7. Hands Up - I Love You 8. Higher 9. Lucy One 10. Two Black Bones 11. Black Mambo 12. Nightly Disease Part II

Some happier news, here is the setlist from Röhre in Stuttgart, Germany on November 15th:

Setlist Röhre, Stuttgart, Germany - November 15th 2001:

November 18th 2001 - The Dutch radio station Kink FM broadcast an acoustic Madrugada "2 Metre Session" today. It was not a new session, but the one that was recorded on April 5th last year. In addition to that, a full session was promised by the DJ, but eventually only three of the six songs recorded were actually broadcast, "This Old House," "Strange Color Blue" and "Higher." Thanks to Black"Tonny"Mambo and Mohawk from the discussion forum for this info.

In yesterday's issue of the Norwegian newspaper VG there is a short article about Madrugada's concert in Berlin on Friday. The article is available here. The article says that a song called "Departure 6" would be played at the concert; it was not, and the correct title is "Departure #1". It also says that the band is planning to go into studio next Spring, and that they are hoping to have a new album out by Autumn next year.

The German e-zine alternativenation.de has put up an interview with Frode done at Markthalle in Hamburg, Germany on November 2nd, available here, and a review of the concert the same night, available here. Both are in German.

November 15th 2001 - The Dutch television channel VPRO taped Madrugada at Melkweg in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on the 8th, using four cameras; one big one at the back, two in front and one walking around. It is scheduled for broadcast on the program Lola Da Musica on January 16th 2002. More information can be found here. Thanks to Maarten Duits and Marc Verhees for the information.

Apparently the Dutch radio station Kink FM will broadcast a Madrugada 2 Metre Session this Sunday. This is not supposed to be the session they did in May last year, but a new one. Thanks to Anders Arvesen for this information. If anyone has more information, please do not e-mail it to me but rather post it at the discussion forum, as I will be away all weekend and will not be able to post any additional information that I receive. Thank you very much.

Here is the setlist from Batschapp in Frankfurt, German two nights ago. Notice thw two new songs, "You Turned Me Away" and "Lord Why Have You Left Me?". Thanks to Christina Buech for the information. Apparently Sivert said something like "There's a guy taping the show... I don't mind... since it's such a good show, the best we've done on this tour. Just don't put the new songs on the Internet."

Setlist Batschkapp, Frankfurt, Germany - November 13th 2001:
1. Only When You're Gone 2. You Turned Me Away 3. Nightly Disease Part I 4. A Deadend Mind 5. Strange Colour Blue 6. Belladonna 7. The Frontman 8. Hands Up - I Love You 9. Higher 10. Lucy One 11. Two Black Bones 12. Black Mambo 13. Vocal 14. Lord Why Have You Left Me? 15. Sister 16. We Are Go 17. Nightly Disease Part II

Virgin Records Germany have pressed some promotional flyers for the ongoing German leg of Madrugada's European tour. The front of it can be seen here and the back of it here. Notice the webpage address in the bottom left corner of the back, and then take a look at the address of the page you are currently at. I have no idea how that happened. But once again I will stress that this is a fan page only and that it should not be seen as an official resource.

November 14th 2001 - Here is the setlist from Botanique in Brussels, Belgium four nights ago. Sivert dedicated the concert to Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone and the only Belgian person musicians have ever heard of. Thanks to Derrik from the discussion forum for the information and the setlist.

Setlist Botanique, Brussel, Belgium - November 10th 2001:
1. Big Sleep 2. Quite Emotional 3. Black Mambo 4 Strange Colour Blue 5. Belladonna 6. The Frontman 7. Hands Up - I love you 8. A Deadend Mind 9. Higher 10. Lucy One 11. Two Black Bones 12. We are go 13. Rollercoaster 14. Nightly Disease Part II 15. Sister 16. Only When You're Gone

Twenty-three pictures that I took at Markthalle in Hamburg, Germany on November 2nd are now available here. Pictures from the night after, at Star Club in Dresden, are coming soon.

November 13th 2001 - Last night Madrugada performed on a television talkshow called "Barend en van Dorp" in The Netherlands. They played "A Deadend Mind" live. Thanks a lot to Maarten Duits for the information.

At the concert at Monty in Antwerp in Belgium two nights ago, two new acoustic songs were debuted as Sivert said they had rehearsed in the afternoon. One was called something like "You Left Me," while the other one might have the word "God" in the title. Thanks to Sonja and Simon for this information. Anthony Jacobs submitted this setlist, which is not entirely correct but based on the one the band used for the concert.

Setlist Monty, Antwerp, Belgium - November 11th 2001:
Big Sleep / A Deadend Mind / Nightly Disease Part I / Nightly Disease Part II / Turn Oh Turn / Quite Emotional / Electric / Hands Up - I Love You / The Frontman / Belladonna / Lucy One / Two Black Bones / Black Mambo / Vocal / Only When You're Gone

Two fan-submitted Madrugada concert reviews, from Cologne and Hamburg, are available at visions.de. They should be easily accessible by searching for Madrugada in the top right corner of the main page. Visions are presenting the band's German tour.

November 10th 2001 - Madrugada's performance at Melkweg in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on the 8th was filmed by the Dutch television channel VPRO for the program Loladamusica. It was also recorded by a member of the audience. St. Thomas was supposed to have opened for Madrugada, but for some reason Lift To Experience did instead. A member of St. Thomas joined Madrugada on violin on "A Deadend Mind" and "Only When You're Gone," though. The venue was sold out, with about 1.000 people in the audience. Thanks to Maarten Duits, Christina Buech and Marc Verhees for the information.

Setlist Melkweg, Amsterdam, The Netherlands - November 8th 2001:
1. Black Mambo 2. Strange Color Blue 3. Belladonna 4. The Frontman 5. Hands Up - I Love You 6. A Deadend Mind 7. Quite Emotional 8. Norwegian Hammerworks Corp. 9. Lucy One 10. Two Black Bones 11. We Are Go 12. Rollercoaster 13. Nightly Disease Part II 14. Vocal 15. Sister 16. Only When You're Gone

The setlist for the concert at Cactus Club, Brugge, Belgium yesterday will be available soon, as it was recorded by a member of the audience. Unfortunately St. Thomas' opening performance was cut short, as the band was really not in the mood for playing due to their VISA cards and mobile phones having been stolen. They played two songs before singer Thomas said they did not like playing for the Belgians as they were like a Norwegian audience and they do not like playing for Norwegians. Then they played another couple of songs, and halfway through one of them Thomas said he did not feel like playing any more, and left the stage. The rest of the band left when they realized he was not coming back.

Madrugada played a usual set, but after the last song Sivert stayed on the stage. Due to the fact that they had not gotten to rehearse it with the band yet, he had to play a new song called "Now He Has To Change His Mind" alone with his acoustic guitar. Thanks to Stan103.

November 9th 2001 - Madrugada apparently played a fantastic concert in Groningen, The Netherlands, two nights ago. The venue is not very big, but it was cozy and intimate. There were people inside who only wanted shelter from rain, as they had no intensions of watching the band and kept raising their voices during the band*s quiet songs. Apparently Sivert re-arranged some lyrics and told them to "Shut the fuck up." Thanks a lot to Black"Tonny"Mambo, Mohawk and Schumi3 from the discussion forum for this information and the setlist.

Setlist Vera, Groningen, The Netherlands - November 7th 2001:
1. Big Sleep 2. Black Mambo 3. Strange Colour Blue 4. Beautyproof 5. The Frontman 6. Hands up - I Love You 7. A Deadend Mind 8. Quite Emotional 9. Norwegian Hammerwork Corp. 10. Lucy One 11. Two Black Bones 12. We Are Go 13. Rollercoaster 14. Nightly Disease Part II 15. Vocal 16. Sister 17. Only When You're Gone

Virgin are giving away free tickets to Madrugada's concerts at Röhre in Frankfurt and Columbiahalle in Berlin, Germany on the 13th and the 16th. What you have to do is to send an e-mail to astrid.assel@virginmusic.com and tell them what Madrugada means. You also have to tell them which concert you would like tickets for in case you win, and your mailing address so that the tickets can be sent to you. The competition ends on Sunday November 11th. Thanks to Bernadette and virginnewsletter.de for the information. Good luck!

November 8th 2001 - A story written by myself about the two concerts Madrugada did in Hamburg and in Dresden last weekend is available here. The story includes information about the concerts, setlists, Jon's old band Supreme Dreams, finger paint autographs and that they are planning on recording a new album in Spring next year. Pictures will be added soon.

November 5th 2001 - Madrugada played at Prime Club, a small and sympathetic venue with a very low ceiling last night. The stage is almost on floor level, so it can be hard to see much unless you are in the very front of the audience, but the band seemed to enjoy the closeness with their spectators. Thanks a lot to André Schwickert for the information and the setlist.

Setlist Prime Club, Cologne, Germany - November 4th 2001:
1. Black Mambo 2. Strange Colour Blue 3. Belladonna 4. The Frontman 5. Hands Up - I Love You 6. A Deadend Mind 7. Quite Emotional 8. Norwegian Hammerworks Corp. 9. Lucy One 10. Two Black Bones 11. We Are Go 12. Rollercoaster 13. Vocal 14. Higher 15. Nightly Disease Part II 16. Sister

November 4th 2001 - Sorry about the lack of updates lately. I am currently in the process of moving, and have therefore had a lot of other things to focus on. I went to see Madrugada at Markthalle in Hamburg and at Star Club in Dresden, both in Germany, on the 2nd and 3rd, and a long text about these two concerts will be available soon. Also, pictures from both concerts will be put up some time in the near future.
