News: What is happening in the world of Madrugada and on this page? I try to stay as updated as possible, and I will try to bring you the latest rumours and facts concerning Madrugada. Of course, you will also be able to read all the interesting stuff about what has been updated or changed on this very webpage.

June 22nd 2002 - Madrugada have kicked off their Summer performances with a concert at the small and intimate Knaack Klub in Berlin, Germany on the 19th, and at Tivoli in Utrecht, The Netherlands last night. They will follow up with Southside Festival and Hurrican Festival in Neuhasen Ob Eck and in Scheessel, both in Germany, this weekend. Then they will play at Effenaar in Eindhoven and at LVC in Leiden, both in The Netherlands, on the 25th and the 26th, at Openair St. Gallen in St. Gallen, Switzerland on the 28th and at Rock Werchter in Werchter, Belgium on the 30th.

After that there are only three confirmed appearances in July and August, at Zillo Festival at Hahn Flughafen in Hunsrück, Germany on July 13th and at Woodstage Festival at Gründelpark in Glachau, Germany on July 14th, then at Betong in Oslo, Norway on August 7th as a kick-off show for Øyafestival. Anyone going to these shows or anyone who has info on change of venues or dates, cancelations or additional shows that have not been mentioned here should feel free to send a mail and let me know about it.

When it comes to the performance at Knaack Klub on the 19th, they played these songs: "Movin' Up," "Proxy," "A Deadend Mind," "Hands Up - I Love You," "The Frontman," "Belladonna," "Blood Shot," "Lucy One," "Nightly Disease Part II" and "7 Seconds."

They played for a bit less than an hour, performing the new songs "Movin' Up," "Proxy," "Blood Shot" and "7 Seconds." A planned encore consisting of the two new songs "I'm Not Afraid" and "Try" along with the good old "Vocal" was not performed due to Sivert not feeling well due to the extreme heat in the small and intimate venue. The short concert and no encore disappointed a few people from the audience who went to the backstage entrance and banged on the door and shouted stuff to the band, for example that Sivert was a loser. Luckily these were a minority, close to everyone stood and cheered for the band for almost ten minutes after the lights were put on, background music was playing and it was obvious the band would not be playing any more, hopefully the band noticed this sign of how much their fans really love them

This was the band's second concert featuring Simen Vangen, even though he does not necessarily fit the band's current image from his outward performance he is apparently a great musician. Thanks a lot to Franziska Ress and madru from the Madrugada discussion forum for the information about this concert.

At Tivoli in Utrecht last night, the band played five or six new songs, and apparently they all kicked ass. They played an almost identical setlist as at Knaack, though they did two encores, the second one containing only one new song called "I'm Ready." The venue was totally sold out. Thanks to Mohawk and Black"Tonny"Mambo from the discussion forum for this information.

Franziska Ress talked to Frode after the concert at Knaack Klub, and he said the new album is halfway finished, and it will maybe be released in the end of October. Raymond Hauger talked to Eivind Schou from St. Thomas a while ago, and Eivind said he plays violin on two tracks on the new Madrugada record, one of them being "Proxy" and the other might be titled "Adult Connection" although this title is far from certainly correct. On one of the songs he used a Velvet Underground trick of adding distortion to his violin. Eivind says he likes the new album very much, and that it is very rock-orientated. It was recorded in a studio in Berlin, and the band are currently mixing the album in the same studio.

June 3rd 2002 - As mentioned in the news yesterday, the tribute album "Total Lee! - The Songs Of Lee Hazlewood" was released today. On March 1st listened to it for the first time, and here is what he had to say about Madrugada's cover of "Come On Home To Me":

"That's another from 'Requiem For An Almost Lady.' 'Requiem For An Almost Lady' is a very strange album because I wrote it in Sweden and came back to America to record it because I couldn't get it loose enough in Sweden. You can write it and Swedes play it wonderfully and everything else, but I couldn't get it loose enough. So I came to America and did it in our little demo studio downstairs at the office in Los Angeles. And I think it took at least a day and a half just to put it all together. They got a hell of a lot more out of the song than I ever did. Who is it? Madrugada? They did alright. I would not have recognised that one 'til he started on it, 'cause that's very… That has more the feel that the song should have had, I think, the lonely part. The vainness in it is certainly not lonely, but it's depression and everything, that's the way you feel when you're depressed. Though I think I was kind of happy when I wrote this album. I think I'd put that woman behind me and gone on to something better! But as I said, I wrote it in Sweden, and I came back to America to record it because - I got a lot of Swedish musician buddies who'll kill me for saying that - but it was just not happening over there. It happened in America enough."

You can find more information about Hazlewood and what he had to say about the other covers on the album at City Slang's homepage.

June 2nd 2002 - The compilation album "Total Lee! - The Songs Of Lee Hazlewood" will be released by City Slang tomorrow. The album includes a cover of "Come On Home To Me" by Madrugada feat. Neil McNasty, along with Hazlewood covers by Claexico, Evan Dando, Erlend Øye from Kings Of Convenience and St. Thomas. The album will be available on CD and 2LP.

Former Madrugada drummer Jon Lauvland Pettersen has started a new band, Long Range Desert Group, also known as LRDG. The band consists of Jon on drums and piano, his brother Tomas from Perculator and Sternklang on electric bass and upright bass, Christian Lysvåg, formerly of Condoors, on vocals and guitar and Marius Almås Johansen, formerly of Abbey's Adoption, on guitar. LRDG played a short but very good concert in Vesterålen, Norway on Friday. The music is apparently very melancholy and uncomplicated, with elements of both jazz and rock and with an upright basscentral in the band's sound. Thanks to Martin Bergseng Lange and Vesteraalens Avis for the information.

Due to lots of requests, Madrugada lyrics have been put up on this page again. They were taken down about half a year ago, due to the band signing a publishing deal with a large company, but as a lot of people have been requesting the lyrics they are once again available. Please keep in mind that the lyrics published on this page are not in any way official lyrics, but interpretations done by fans of the band. They probably contain some misintepretations.

In addition, the exclusive pictures are back, at least sort of. Pictures from eight concerts are available, and more, including some that have never been published before, will be put up as soon as I have the time to index them, scan them and make thumbnails for them. There are currently one hundred and ninety-four exclusive pictures available.
