July 18th 2007 - The Show Must Go On
It can not have been an easy decision at all, but after Robert Burås' sudden and tragic passing last week Sivert Høyem has decided to try to go on with this summer's scheduled festival appearances. The first upcoming show, in Brønnøysund on Thursday, has been cancelled due to Robert's funeral on that day, but after that Sivert Høyem & The Volunteers will play in Mo i Rana on Friday and in Tromsø on Saturday. At least for the first of these shows, Madrugada-bassist Frode Jacobsen will be joining The Volunteers, on guitar.

Sivert Høyem & The Volunteers were also just recently confirmed for the much-criticized Pulpit Rock Festival in Stavanger on August 18th.

Hopefully, being on stage and performing the music that they love will help both the band members and the fans to get through the grieving process after losing a dear friend and a fabulous musician.

Robert Solli Burås (August 12th 1975 - July 12th 2007) will be buried on Thursday.

July 13th 2007 - Robert S. Burås passed away last night

---

Our beloved friend, Robert Burås, passed away on 12 July 2007.
He was 31 years old.

Robert dedicated his life to music. He was guitarist and composer in Madrugada for 12 years. He spent this last year on his band My Midnight Creeps and also on composing and recording a new Madrugada album. Robert passed away at a time when he was at his most creative. Through his recorded work and from stages both domestic and international, he made his eternal mark on Norwegian rock history.

Everyone who knew him and worked with him will remember him as a generous and warm person who lived and breathed for music. There are many of us who cared a lot for Robert who are having an extremely hard time today.Robert will always be a part of us and he will always be deeply missed. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family. We request that Robert's family may be left to grieve in peace.

March 12th 2007 - Page updates
I am not good at writing these news updates, unfortunately it is quite a lot easier to just post a message in the discussion forum and get instant feedback, as opposed to writing about it here and hope that someone reads this. I guess it is time for a better news system - or maybe even integrating the news with the forum - because when even madrugada.net has a more recent update than this page, something is seriously wrong!

But those who use the resources this page provide should have noticed that things are being worked on constantly even if it does not get reported in a news update. The concert chronology is up-to-date with everything that happened with Madrugada in 2006 (not very much is scheduled for 2007), and both the Sivert Høyem & The Volunteers and My Midnight Creeps sections are being updated throughout the current tours both bands are undertaking. The section about Madrugada's next album offers the very few glimpses into what we might expect from the band that we, the fans, have been able to figure out so far.

The most prominent change as of late, in addition to the much-worked-on videography, is the addition of a proper picture gallery! Currently the years 1993 to 2002 are well-covered, with more than 1.000 pictures of the band live on stage to browse through! This will be expanded with the more recent years once time permits such an undertaking. Special thanks to Annina Mürner for her invaluable help in cataloging so many of these photos.

As if that was not enough, the previous guide to the rare and unreleased Madrugada songs has now been expanded to a full-fledged Madrugada Song Guide, with the aim of listing every single song performed by Madrugada, Sivert Høyem & The Opposition / Volunteers and My Midnight Creeps. At the moment, 207 songs and alternate titles are listed, with notes, links to lyrics and a complete guide to where in the band's discography each song is available.

So a lot of stuff is happening even if this news page has remained blank since the end of last year. Hopefully everyone knows to use the discussion forum for the latest updates on Sivert Høyem & The Opposition's "Exiles" album, the Sivert Høyem tour dates with setlists, pictures and impressions, and the My Midnight Creeps thread about the launch of their new album "Histamin" and the on-going Norwegian tour.

December 14th 2006 - Birthday extravaganza
Seven years and two days ago, this webpage saw the lights. Having been impressed with this hyped but - at the time - still pretty unknown band that I had seen perform in the basement of a hotel to a crowd of about one hundred people a month earlier, I found it frustrating that there was not really any updated websites dedicated to them, and especially that you could not find any live performances of them online, as the live performance had really been the part of the Madrugada experience that blew me away. So I figured that instead of waiting for someone else to do the work, I might as well do it myself, and madrugada.de started out as a tiny little page with a few photos from that concert in Egersund, Norway and a few MP3s of the very little live and unreleased material that existed at the time.

I am incredibly pleased that seven years later this little band still manages to remain interesting enough that every new concert or release is eagerly awaited. It also makes me very happy that, seven years later, this website is continuing to grow, with a discussion forum of over five hundred registered members and, today, with the unveiling of a project that has taken months and months to compile; The Madrugada Videography.

Consisting of information and screenshots of every single Madrugada-related video known to exist, it will hopefully be a great resource for Madrugada fans who want to know what is out there and to keep track of what they already have. This section would not have been possible had it not been for the amazing amount of time and energy that Swiss Madrugada fan Annina Mürner has laid down in collecting most of these videos and writing down notes and creating screenshots. I am very grateful for all the work that she has done, and that I am able to make this website a much better one by getting to present it here.

Additionally, and in the spirit of making this celebration of madrugada.de video-oriented, I would like to present four downloadable videos that I do not think have ever been available online, and thus I expect that very few of you have been able to see these until now. Enjoy the following videos, and feel free to drop in at the discussion forum and give your feedback about the videos, the videography or just the band in general.

- The Kids Are On High Street (live June 18th 2005)

- Stories From The Streets (live August 13th 2005)

- Running Out of Time (live August 13th 2005)

And, last of all, to celebrate the new release of "Exiles," a Sivert Høyem live performance:

- Sivert Høyem - Far From Here (live March 29th 2004)

Thanks a lot for caring about this band and this website for all these years, it has been an enjoyable seven years, and may the next seven yield just as much incredible music as we have had the priviledge of experiencing so far.

November 19th 2006 - Sivert Høyem & The Volunteers
The next solo album from Sivert Høyem - entitled "Exiles" and this time done with the backing of The Volunteers - will be released in Norway through Sivert's own record label Hektor Grammofon and EMI on December 11th. The first radio promo for the album, "Into The Sea," was released to Norwegian radio on November 8th, and, amongst others, received a review rating of five out of six in the national newspaper VG.

The album was recorded in the studio of The Soundtrack Of Our Lives in Göteborg, Sweden. Sivert's current backing-band, The Volunteers, consists of Fredrik Viklund as co-producer and guitarist, Børge Fjordheim on drums, Lars Borg on bass and Mikael Lindqvist on keyboards.

What the plans are for a release outside of Norway is currently unknown, as is whether there are any plans for touring in Norway around the time of the album release.

As a side-note, Madrugada's new studio in Oslo is apparently finished, and the boys seem eager to spend time in the forthcoming months recording new Madrugada material, with Robert's side-project My Midnight Creep's follow-up album seemingly put on hold for now, though it was earlier reported to be very close to release this Autumn.

An MP3 of the promo track "Into The Sea" recorded off the radio can be downloaded here.

August 24th 2006 - The Tomato Incident
On July 16th, I got to celebrate my birthday in Madrugada's company - more on that story some time soon, I promise - and the thing that a lot of people do not know about the members of Madrugada is that they are incredibly funny people, and a joy to be around. But their funniest jokes are usually also the meanest ones, and usually at the expense of other people. I can take a joke, but can they?

Because today the joke is at their expense, as I have the pleasure of presenting "The Tomato Picture" in public for the very first time ever. For those that do not know the story behind it... well, the picture pretty much says it all. Taken by myself in Freiburg on their first major European tour in Autumn 2000, the little collection of refreshables on the table probably explains why my sought-after lovely band picture turned out to be one better hidden to collect dust in the personal collection for five years. Enjoy!

Thanks to Frode, who did the mistake of mentioning this incident and thus reminding me that I have this picture. Next time joke about someone else singing "Lift Me" with you! Haha.

August 7th 2006 - Online Fandom
Madrugada fan and discussion forum user Nancy Baym has put up an interesting new webpage dedicated keeping track of the massive changes in the relationships amongst fans, artists and industries that the Internet is enabling, Online Fandom.

Since she is a Madrugada fan herself, our favorite band's relations to their fans is a topic that keeps popping up in her writings, an example being the Madrugada fans' useage of the discussion forum during the band's European tour last year:

"Last fall the band toured Europe. Fans on that forum recorded several shows themselves, spent a good deal of time not just creating torrents, but also in some cases remastering the recordings for best sound. Others posted photos they had taken. Living in the States, it was a lot closer to getting to see them live than I ever would have gotten without the board. There is an archive of back concerts that are periodically reseeded and traded again. I’ve amassed enough live Madrugada recordings through the board that I have a pretty good sense of what they were like on each tour of their career. [...]

"Not only did it keep fans who weren’t able to make this tour involved with the band long after their last release might have stopped getting playtime, but it also brought in fans who didn’t like the recent release, fans who wanted to know what old songs were being played. So it kept fans they could easily have lost involved with them."

Additionally there is also an interview with me available there, on the topic of having run the fanpage madrugada.de for all these years. It can be read here.

August 7th 2006 - Now I'm ready to go anywhere
Yesterday, the mega-rare video for "Ready" that Madrugada did in 2002 was uploaded to Youtube. For all these years the only information about this video that fans of the band have had has been that apparently the video was recorded and that for one reason or another the band were not satisfied with it and chose not to release it as a music video. Now, thanks to the wonders of free video hosting and anonymous sharing, fans can finally enjoy another Madrugada music video in all its glory.

Compared to the somber and dark Madrugada videos such as "Majesty" and "Hands Up - I Love You" this one is most definitely... different.

Watch: Madrugada - "Ready" (Youtube)

You can keep track of and watch more Madrugada videos in the videos thread on the discussion forum, where this link was first posted.

July 12th 2006 - Madrugada in Langesund
On July 8th Madrugada performed at Wrightegaarden in Langesund, Norway. They have made a habit out of playing there in the Summer, this was the fourth time since 2001 that they visited the place. The concert was a great illustration - both musically and visually - of Madrugada's rise in the last year to becoming Norway's biggest band at the time. Most notably in that Madrugada have always played on the small stage at Wrightegaarden, to about 700 people. This year, they had brought along their own, huge stage, which was put up right next to the usual one - which dwarfed in the new one's presence.

There were also between 1.500 and 1.800 people present, and to the band's great delight they were not just there to listen to "Lift Me," but greeted the band warmly from they kicked off with "Stories From The Streets," through a fabulous "Black Mambo" in the middle and to singing (and shouting) along to "Blood Shot Adult Commitment" during the encore. (Read a full review and see pictures from the concert in this thread in the discussion forum.)

After the show I got to sit down with the members of the band, and they admitted that they were starting to feel jaded, and that it would be good to take a break soon. Although some fans have interpreted comments from the stage lately as the band being tired of eachother, they say that their problem is not that they spend a lot of time together, but that they do not get to spend much of that time doing what they really want - writing and rehearsing new material.

One example of that is the setlist for the concert that night, where the band wanted to rehearse a new set and bring out some old classics such as "Lucy One" that they have not played for ages, but that there is just not enough time to get to practice it well enough, and that they definitely do not want to go on stage in front of 1.500 people and not sound good enough. Sivert also told a journalist from a local newspaper that "Lift Me" would soon get a deserved break from being on the setlist, and it is obvious that the massive attention that song has gotten (and equally subtracted from the rest of ther material) is taking its toll on the band.

But for being a band that have toured as much as Madrugada have done lately, the band members still have a surprisingly well-filled reservoir of creativity to dip into. First out is Robert, who is finishing work on the follow-up album to last year's My Midnight Creeps-album. They are still working on the album, but it is scheduled for an October release, to be followed by a Norwegian tour with "tons of concerts" in November. Unfortunately both the album-release and the concert activities will be limited to Norway, though they have licensing deals for the first album that sees it released in Denmark and the Benelux countries, so something might also happen with the next one.

Sivert is also in the process of wrapping up work on the follow-up to his debut solo album from 2004, but the release of this one has been pushed back to some time early next year. To fit in with Madrugada's activities it would have been preferrable to release this one around the same time as the My Midnight Creeps record, but Sivert says he just does not have the extra energy to focus on this one so soon. After Madrugada's Summer activities come to a stand-still, he will be repeating last year's foot-trip to Spain, this time taking compandre Fredrik with him. There will be a few concerts to support the record release, but it will not be a huge touring effort. Sivert's solo-project is also limited to Norway. Sivert owns the rights to his material himself, and says that also with this, he just does not feel that he has the time and the energy to focus on impressing record labels to release the material. He jokingly added that "at least we have to take a trip to Greece," though.

When it comes to what will eventually become the next Madrugada album, it is starting to come into shape. The band will be recording it themselves in their own studio, which they are currently building in Oslo. It will also be their rehearsal space, and they are planning to spend several months working on the album, starting at the end of the year. They already have some experience with recording at their rehearsals with the "Shit City Sessions." These were sessions they did in the studio in Halden when they recorded "Industrial Silence." When producer Kai Andersen went home for the night, they stayed and did their own recordings. From this session, "Terraplane" ended up on the album, "Legends And Bones" on the "Beautyproof" single and "Zebra" on the "Ready" EP.

"You Better Leave" should be known to most Madrugada fans as it is on "Live At Tralfamadore" and the DVD, and a studio version of that one is to expected. The new song that has been performed at many of the concerts this year, "Whatever Happened To You," is also one they like very much. Additionally, they are finishing up a new song which was entitled "What's On Your Mind" but is currently titled "Lost In Time," but are just waiting for Sivert to finish the lyrics to it, so that title is likely to change. Sivert has spent his time writing lyrics to the song "Ballad Of Federico Garcia Lorca," which has an impressive fourteen verses.

Additionally there are two songs from "The Nightly Disease" and "The Deep End" sessions that are likely to be re-visited for the next album, in "City Blues" which was left off the follow-up to "Industrial Silence," and a song titled "Gloria" from the sessions in California in late 2004. The latter has already gotten a name-change, as the band thinks there are too many songs already titled the same. Sivert referred to this one as a "great, great song," but that the band was so scared of not getting the full potential out of the song that they spent three days recording it, only to have to scrap the progress once they realized they could do it better than that. Sivert pretty much guaranteed that this one would be on the next album.

The 'theme' album "Ivory Town" has once again been pushed to the back of the priority-list, but Robert says they keep working on it, so it is not being forgotten. Releasing something from the impressive collection of b-sides and unreleased songs they sit on is also something they would find interesting, but no concrete plans for this exist.

As a note of interest, Sivert could tell that his favorite Madrugada session and "piece of work" that he has ever done was the last studio session they did with Jon, at Athletic Sound in Halden in Spring 2001. They spent a week in the studio, and the work yielded the "4-Track Country" songs and "Fast Blues For Little V." on the "A Deadend Mind" EP, while the rest of the songs have remained unreleased. This includes studio versions of two songs old fans might remember from concerts, "Departure #1" and "Lord, Why Have You Left Me," a song called "If Only I Had My Guitar" with very long lyrics and Robert 'rapping' in the beginning, and the throwaway early version of "Lift Me" that the band were unsatisfied with and that Ane Brun found when looking for a collabortation with the band.

July 3rd 2006 - Discography update
The Madrugada discography has gotten a major update, with close to twenty album covers added or updated, including the very rare "Fast Blues For Little V." promo, "Everybody Knows This Is Norway" double-LP and the "Love's Institution" one-song vinyl that came with certain early copies of "Grit."

Also note that the Madrugada b-side "Wheelchair" is available on the recently released compilation album for the Oslo rock club Mono, "In Glorious Mono." This one is probably only available in Norway, but should be a good chance of getting ahold of this great tune for everyone who does not have the limited edition version of "Industrial Silence."

The live version of "You Better Leave" from Oslo Spektrum has also been released as a promo, and has been getting some airplay on Norwegian television stations in the last couple of months.

Special thanks to Benjamin for his continued help in keeping the discography as complete and up-to-date as possible.

June 26th 2006 - First few Summer shows
The first few shows of Madrugada's Summer schedule have been undertaken, with various experiences for the band. At the first show at Rådhusplassen in Molde on June 9th, only about 700 people showed up, and according to reports many people had come only to hear "Lift Me," and left after the band had performed the song.

A week later at Tau Aktivitetssenter at a youth festival at Tau, only a few hundred young kids showed up, leaving the big gymnastics hall sparsely attended. The sound was very bad on stage, and the event was not very profesionally organized, prompting Sivert to tell the audience the next evening in Gjøvik that it was "nice to do a normal concert," and that the concert at Tau had been the worst one they had ever done. Even so, a few nice photos from the Tau concert can be seen here.

But the concert at Gjøvik was not the best they ever did, either. The large audience of 2.500 people were generally not very into what was happening on stage, until Benedicte Narum came on stage to sing "Lift Me" with the band. It seems the band is starting to get quite frustrated with the fact that "Lift Me" is the song 'everybody' wants to hear, and both this night and the previous one at Tau Sivert introduced the song with something similar to "a boring, boring country song we have written."

On Saturday June 24th they performed at Øratorget in Sunndsalsøra where they played to 1.300 people, the most people that have ever attended a concert in that town.

Yesterday they played the Hell Blues Extravaganza at Rica Hell Hotell in Stjørdal, to a full venue, and apparently it was a fabulous concert. Giving the audience a blues alibi, Madrugada brought up Kid Andersen on stage, and gave the audience the blues they craved to finish off the festival. It was rumoured that the band had practiced some blues cover songs for the event, hopefully we will find out exactly which songs they did.

June 26th 2006 - New solo material
Both Sivert and Robert are in the process of wrapping up work for the follow-up albums of their respective solo projects.

Sivert Høyem finished recording the follow-up to 2004's "Ladies And Gentlemen Of The Opposition" at the end of May. It was recorded at the studio of Soundtrack Of Our Lives in Gothenburg, Sweden and featured The Volunteers as the backing band, and Head, who produced Madrugada's "Grit," as the producer. Many of the same people who took part in his last solo album are also present on this new one, except for former Madrugada-drummer Simen Vangen who is not doing the drums this time around.

Sivert could tell me that the sound of the album is 'bigger' than last time, and that there is on song on the album entitled "Exile" which is nine minutes long. He wants to get the album released by late Autumn, but it might get postponed until after Christmas depending on the plans for Madrugada in this time period.

Robert and My Midnight Creeps have also finished their second album, which should be out some time in Autumn.

Both Sivert and Robert are expected to go on tour with the new material.

Thanks to Bladet Vesterålen, Anders and Cecile for addition information.

April 12th 2006 - Another UK gig (cancelled)
Update April 13th: Madrugada will unfortunately NOT be playing at this event, though they are still listed on the front page of the festival's website.

Original news update:

Madrugada seem confirmed to be playing at Barfly - The Great Escape in Brighton, England, a festival that takes place in the city between May 18th and 20th. There was already talk of this as early as February, when Martin Elbourne - who is in charge of the Glastonbury Festival and also this one - told Norwegian media that Madrugada was one of the bands he was planning on bringing over to the UK, and now it seems to be confirmed. The Great Escape aims to replicate similar events in the Netherlands (Eurosonic), the US (SXSW) and by:Larm (Norway), describing themselves this way:

"'Barfly - The Great Escape' is an international live music event; by day, a series of insightful interviews with leading figures from the worldwide music industry; by night, a festival of export-ready artists from across the globe performing at 10 walk-able venues, all under pinned by a comprehensive digital strategy and widespread coverage from media partners."

"It will take place in the seaside city of Brighton, UK from 18th - 20th of May 2006, it will bring together all the key elements of the live and recorded music industries in a way that will entertain, educate and excite all comers - from experienced industry campaigners to those who just want to experience good music."

Brighton is situated just fifty minutes outside of the centre of London, and the festival will see 100 bands playing at 14 different venues. Other Norwegian bands that also seem to be confirmed are Low Frequency In Stereo, Kaizers Orchestra and Serena Maneesh.

April 12th 2006 - More concert dates confirmed
The concert in Molde, reported in yesterday's news, has now been confirmed. Hopalong Knut will be the support act, and concert tickets can be bought here:

06/09/2006 - Rådhusplassen, Molde, Norway

Two more concerts have also been confirmed:

06/23/2006 - Øratorget, Sunndsalsøra, Norway

07/16/2006 - Sogndalstrand Amfi, Sokndal, Hauge i Dalane, Norway

Tickets for the first one in Sunndalsøra can be bought here, and for the second one here.

Interestingly enough for someone like me, who has been following this band for more than six years now, the concert in Sokndal takes place about fifteen minutes from where I live - on my birthday. I guess I know where I will be celebrating...

April 11th 2006 - Norwegian Summer concerts announced
The following Madrugada concerts have been announced for June this year:

06/10/2006 - Glopperock Festivalen 2006, Nordfjordfolkemuseum, Sandane, Norway

06/24/2006 - Hell Blues Extravaganza, Rica Hell Hotell, Stjørdal, Norway

06/29/2006 - Vollane, Karlsjohansvern, Horten, Norway

07/14/2006 - Straune Idrettspark, Sotra, Norway

The last one is supposed to be as support for John Fogerty.

In addition, the following concert has also been reported, but has not yet been confirmed:

06/09/2006 - Rådhusplassen, Molde, Norway

Tickets through all of these concerts can be purchased online.

Thanks to blaublau and Cecilie at the discussion forum for the information.

Also at the forum, Stardust added that there are no planned events in Europa for 2006, which is something that may change but which is not likely. He also added that the band will do some shows in Norway this Summer, some of those dates were later announced and are listed above, but that the Greek dates for the Summer - including one on July 19th with Puressence that seemed confirmed - will unfortunately not happen.

April 5th 2006 - The Near Future For Madrugada
On Saturday, April 1st, Madrugada wrapped up one of the biggest and most successful Norwegian tours ever. They did so by selling out Rockefeller in Oslo, having spent the past five weeks travelling through the entire country - from Kirkenes in the very north to Kristiansand in the south - and reportedly selling an impressive ninety-five percent of all tickets that were made available for the thirty-two concerts of the tour.

After a few days to catch their breath, today they are heading to London to play at Dingwalls. This is a one-off concert they are doing, but a very important one. First of all because Britain has never welcomed them with open arms, even after massive effort were put into the British market with concerts and the special release of "Grit," they have hardly made an impact there, and will be looking to change that. Second of all because their contract with EMI Norway has now expired, and Dingwalls in London is the place where major labels will be showing up to take a look at the band, meaning this one concert could very well be the decisive factor in determining the band's future.

When the gear is being packed down after this concert, the band members can look forward some well-deserved vacation. They have reportedly decided to take one month off, but after that they will be back in full throttle, even though not very much will happen with Madrugada. Sivert will be recording the follow-up to his solo debut with The Opposition, 2004's "Ladies And Gentlemen Of The Opposition," Robert will be working with his solo project My Midnight Creeps, while Frode will be looking at spending some of the money the band have earned with their latest success by building a new studio for the band in Oslo, where they are looking to record demos by Summer.

So for fans there will be new solo work to catch up on, Madrugada have a new album up their sleeves which they have already said they are planning to release by early 2007, plus they are now looking at finalizing the long-awaited concept-album "The Story Of Ivory Town." Even in a year that will mostly consist of taking a break, there is a lot to look forward to.
