Madrugada Song Guide: This started out as a simple guide to the cover songs Madrugada have performed and the songs that were left unreleased in one form or another. Since then, the scope has been widened, and it now aims at including every single song Madrugada, Sivert Høyem & The Opposition / Volunteers or My Midnight Creeps have ever performed, be it original or a cover, with alternate titles, notes about the songs, links to lyrics whenever available and links to the discography for the releases the songs are available on.
| Song title - | 7 Seconds (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Robert, this started as a smooth highway-song, very soft, but they turned up the tempo and got the garage-rock and punk-sound for it. He says that they did not manage to play the entire song when recording it live for the album, but that it is the first complete take that ended up on the album, as it had the rough arrangement that they were looking for. Frode says that is a good example of the difference between recording live and doing it layer by layer like they had done on the previous albums. He says you feel under each other's skin and know what the others are feeling and therefore get the attitude, mood and energy that you had right there and then. (Mute, 2002)

| Song title - | Black Mambo (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | Frode came up with the fabulous bass-riff for this song when he was trying to figure out how to play Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine."
Sivert explains that "We really enjoy creating those dark, atmospheric, uneasy moods. Being Scandinavian has something to do with it. We can be stiff and introverted. Norway is very dark in the winter so it makes sense to me. You see the dark and gloom in Munch’s pictures. It must have something to do with the music we make but it is not a gimmick." (Madrugada biography, 2006)
Available in a live recording from Bodø Spektrum in Bodø, Norway on August 10th 2005 in two different versions on the live CD "Live At Tralfamadore." The second version on the bonus CD is the 'Terror Mix' done by Madrugada sound engineer Lars Voldsdal.

| Song title - | Blood Shot Adult Commitment (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Robert, this song is from a time period when he had a lot of trouble with his personal life. Sivert says it is the central track of "Grit" that defines everything for him; the theme of becoming independent and running away, and that you have to take responsibility and use common sense. (Mute, 2002)

| Song title - | Come Back Billy Pilgrim (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | Robert thinks this is a cool rock-song, Stooges-like with a very cool groove and a lot of tambourines. Frode says the idea was that the song should sound like it was from the Stone Age, as primitive and simple as possible, so it only works on pure will. (Mute, 2002)
Recorded for "Grit" during a span of three weeks between April and June 2002 at Tritonus Tonstudio Gmbh in Berlin, Germany.
The title is taken from Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse-Five," where the main character is Billy Pilgrim. | | Availability - | Grit (CD, 2002)

| Song title - | Come On Home To Me | | Performer - | Madrugada feat. Neil McNasty | | Notes - | Originally written and performed by Lee Hazlewood. Madrugada's cover version features Neil McNasty and was released on the cover album "Total Lee! The Songs Of Lee Hazlewood" by City Slang in Summer 2002. The recording features samples by Neil McNasty, also known as the band's light engineer Neil Solheim. Recorded after Jon had left and before Simen joined on drums, so the initial plan was to release it with only sampled drums. Then Simen joined, and added some percussion at the end of the song. | | Availability - | Total Lee! The Songs Of Lee Hazlewood (CD, 2002) | |
| Song title - | Don't Let The Flowers Down | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | A really beautiful song written by Karl Storm Andersen and originally performed by Ghostrider. | Song title - | Get Back In Line (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | Sivert says this is their dub-reggae song. From a wild discussion he had with Frode about free love in Berlin. Real reggae-lyrics that he says Frode has to take the responsibility for. (Mute, 2002)

| Song title - | Got You (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | Sivert says he thinks this is a fucking twisted song, a psychotic declaration of love. Almost a rap / hip-hop song in a way, and one of Sivert's favorites from "Grit." According to Robert it might be the most psychotic thing they have done. With a sensitiv guitar solo, almost weeping, as his girlfriend had been taken to the hospital and Robert stayed in the studio just to do this one before going to see her. Robert says it was serious and that he continuously considered leaving without doing the guitar-part, and that it came out as he felt it there and then, with it being incredibly emotional to listen to afterwards. He also thinks it was recorded as a proper band, with them all being in the studio together, and he thinks it was a very extreme moment in the studio where Sivert delivered the vocals, and everything came together at the same moment, something he will never forget. (Mute, 2002)
The original idea behind "Got You" came from the band's creative cover of the 13th Floor Elevators-song "Rollercoaster." It was recorded as an instrumental demo on four-track with Neil McNasty adding loops, and parts from this recording were used for the studio album, though some segments had to be spliced out as the tape the demo was recorded on was in such bad shape that the demo has been known as the "Crummy Tape" version. | | Availability - | Grit (CD, 2002)

| Song title - | Hard To Come Back | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | Available in a live recording from Oslo Spekrum in Oslo, Norway on December 2nd 2005 on the "Live At Tralfamadore" CD. According to Sivert, "Hard To Come Back makes a great opening track. We had stopped playing that song for a while but we did it at the Oslo Spektrum and it was really, really good that night. We finally nailed it." (Madrugada biography, 2006)

| Song title - | Highway Of Light | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Sivert," this is one of my songs that it has taken a long time to finish. I try to describe the mood like it can be in the tour bus at night." (Avisa Nordland, 2008) | | Availability - | Madrugada (CD, 2008) | |

| Song title - | Honey Bee | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Sivert, "my favorite on the album. A ballad. I can not listen to it enough. The text is once again about love, and it features a lady choir of Ane Brun and Ingrid Olava. After we had finished recording it, the Hammond organ started burning. It was Fleetwood Mac's old organ. It could not withstand Frode Jacobsen's fingers." (Avisa Nordland, 2008) | | Availability - | Madrugada (CD, 2008) | |
| Song title - | I Don't Fit (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | Robert says this is a classic Madrugada-song, almost back to the first EP when it comes to sound and feeling. According to Frode he always started with an A minor as the first chord when he played the guitar, but that this time the bad habit was useful. Sivert says the song defines the sound the band had up until "Grit," and is about some 'heavy shit,' about his relationship that broke under mysterious circumstances right before leaving for Berlin to record the album. The relationship got back on track, but Sivert says the girlfriend understandably did not like hearing this song. For Sivert it is a very classic break-up song, a kind of "It Ain't Me Babe" and very Dylan-inspired, definining the band in many ways. (Mute, 2002) | | Availability - | Grit (CD, 2002)

| Song title - | Lift Me | | Performer - | Madrugada, Ane Brun | | Notes - | Originally referred to only as "The Country Song." Throwaway-song performed once in 2001, and then again in an acoustic version in 2004. Then re-surfaced in late 2005 in a Madrugada collaboration with Ane Brun for her album "Duets," with the song also being released as a single. | Song title - | Look Away Lucifer | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Sivert, "the lyrics are old. A real folk rock song. In the middle of the song we enter a chaos-psychedelic style. Here we are also inspired by The Stooges." (Avisa Nordland, 2008) | | Availability - | Look Away Lucifer (CDS, 2007)

| Song title - | Love's Institution (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | The hidden bonus track on "Grit" is known by this title. Was titled "(Ghost) Loves Institution" on promo copies of the album. Was released on a limited edition seven inch to go along with some copies of the vinyl edition of "Grit," which does not include the bonus track, and had the title "Love s Institution" scratched into the vinyl on those. "Love s 1" has also been used as a title to refer to this song, but this is indeed just the catalogue number for the limited edition vinyl. | | Availability - | Grit (CD, 2002) | |
| Song title - | Madrugada (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Robert it is an old idea for a song. Laidback, danceable and hard. Sivert says it is a tribute to themselves and their surrealistic world, and that it came out of a session they did in Copenhagen. He was reading a lot of Federico Garcia Lorcha at the time, so lyrically it is very surrealistic. According to Frode the inpsiration for the music came from Steve Reich and his avant garde-world, and that it took a lot of jamming to get it to work. The idea was that a lot of rhytms should collide and then lock together, a coctail of everything they were doing in the studio at the time, and for him it is weird krautpunk. | Song title - | Majesty (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Robert, this is the big heartbreak, again. Another one. Further in the distance. He says he remembers picking up Sivert out on the town. He was just as wasted himself, but he dragged Sivert out of a bar and got him home. There, Sivert claimed that he had just written "Departure #1 - 11," and this was number 7, Robert believes. He says he was completely knocked over by it, and that he still has the original four-track demo from his living room where they recorded until the early morning. Classic, he believes. (Mute, 2002)
Available in a live recording from Øyafestivalen in Oslo, Norway on August 13th 2005 on the "Live At Tralfamadore" CD. According to Sivert, "there is a very special version from the Øya festival on Live At Tralfamadore. We were very happy when we heard it. That is when I decided the live album was a very good idea." | Song title - | Mother Of Earth (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada, The Silver Band feat. Kebab Kid | | Notes - | A cover of a Gun Club song written by Jeffrey Lee Pierce, first released on the compilation album "Frozen - A Selection Of Polarized Country" in 1999, performed by The Silver Band featuring Kebab Kid, a pseudonym for Madrugada, with The Kebab Kid being the band's sound engineer Lars Voldsdal, who plays acoustic guitar on the original release of this song. A longer version of the song, re-mixed by the band members themselves, is available on the "Electric" EP.
Interestingly, Madrugada's version of this song also includes another Gun Club cover, "Watermelon Man," which they have incorporated into the end of the song.
Available in a live recording from Oslo Spektrum in Oslo, Norway on December 2nd 2005 on the "Live At Tralfamadore" CD and "Live At Oslo Spektrum" DVD. This performance features legendary Gun Club (and Cramps and The Bad Seeds) guitarist Kid Congo Powers on slide guitar. According to Robert, this live performance is "a very dirty, rocking version of one of our favourite songs, really cool. Kid Congo is the nicest, kindest, coolest human being, a fantastic character and person. He was on tour in Europe so he just flew into Oslo for the Spektrum gig. He came to the soundcheck and, on the night, he made his guitar sound like wind and fire. That’s his trademark." | Song title - | Our Time Won't Live That Long | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | First and only Madrugada song featuring Robert on vocals.
According to Sivert, "Robert steals the show with this one. He stayed in the studio while the rest of us went to a bar. We have tried putting on more instruments, but it did not work. Robert sings beautifully." (Avisa Nordland, 2008) | | Availability - | Madrugada (CD, 2008) | |
| Song title - | Proxy (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Sivert, this is a very typical Madrugada-song with blues in the bottom and a lot of reverb in the production. Very sexual, in his view. Frode says is is the most sexy piece of music they have ever written, and it is a tribute to sado-masochism. The song was written by Frode when he was suffering from tinitus, and he says he wrote some very dark lyrics when he was feeling the worst, but that it reminded him too much of something he wanted to get out of his system, and therefore he got Sivert to write new lyrics. | Song title - | Try (lyrics) | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | Robert says this song came from listening to a lot of soul and Motown-productions, with a black woman from LA adding vocals. Three minutes of good time rock'n'roll and a very catchy chorus. Sivert says this is a sort of national anthem for hedonists, with the lyrics "You can never get out of it." | Song title - | Valley of Deception | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Sivert, "A mix of gospel and folk. This was the last thing we recorded in Hoboken. According to Sivert, "one of Robert's good ideas, and we are in our most melodic corner. A pop song inspired by Frank Sinatra and, not the least, lee hazelwood. David Mansfield from Bob Dylan's band in the Seventies plays steel guitar. This will be our next single." (Avisa Nordland, 2008) | | Availability - | Madrugada (CD, 2008) | |
| Song title - | Whatever Happened To You? | | Performer - | Madrugada | | Notes - | According to Sivert it is "a song I worked on for a long time, possibly three years. It has been finished a long time. The lyrics have nothing to do with Robert's passing. It is about love." (Avisa Nordland, 2008)
